Korean War
Outbreak of the War
North Korea's Invasion
On June 25, 1950, approximately 90,000 North Korean soldiers, backed by the Soviet Union and China, crossed the 38th Parallel, the boundary between North Korea and South Korea. This invasion marked the beginning of the Korean War.
The North Korean forces quickly overran large portions of South Korea, capturing the capital city of Seoul within three days. The South Korean army and the United Nations forces sent to defend the country were initially overwhelmed.
Conclusion
The Korean War, which lasted for three years, was a major turning point in the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was the first major armed conflict between the two superpowers, and it set the stage for decades of tension and rivalry.
