Atlanta Braves Sign Gio Urshela After Losing Austin Riley
Braves Bolster Infield with Veteran Third Baseman
The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a deal with free agent third baseman Gio Urshela, according to MLB Trade Rumors. The move comes after the team lost starting third baseman Austin Riley to a knee injury that is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the regular season.
Urshela Brings Experience and Versatility
Urshela, 31, is a veteran infielder with experience at both third base and shortstop. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the New York Yankees before being traded to the Minnesota Twins in 2022. He was released by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday after struggling at the plate this season.
Despite his recent struggles, Urshela has a track record of solid production. In 2021, he hit .276 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs for the Yankees and Twins. He also provides the Braves with a solid defensive option at third base.
Filling the Riley Void
With Riley out for the season, the Braves needed to find a replacement at third base. Urshela is a capable option who can provide both offense and defense. He is expected to slot into the starting lineup immediately.
The Braves have been plagued by injuries this season, but they remain in contention for the NL East division title. The addition of Urshela should help bolster their infield and give them a better chance at reaching the playoffs.
