Norfolk Southern CEO Under Investigation for Alleged Inappropriate Work Relationship
Internal investigation underway, company says
ATLANTA — Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw is under investigation by the company's board of directors for an alleged inappropriate work relationship, the company said in a statement.
The investigation was launched after the company received an anonymous complaint alleging that Shaw had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate.
The company said it is taking the allegations seriously and is committed to conducting a thorough and independent investigation.
The investigation is being led by an outside law firm, and the company said it will cooperate fully with the investigation. "We are committed to maintaining a work environment that is free from harassment and discrimination," the company said in a statement. "We take all allegations of inappropriate behavior seriously, and we will take appropriate action if any wrongdoing is found."Shaw has denied the allegations, and he remains in his position as CEO pending the outcome of the investigation.
The investigation is expected to take several weeks, and the company said it will provide updates as they become available.
The allegations against Shaw come at a time when Norfolk Southern is facing a number of challenges, including the ongoing investigation into the derailment of a train carrying hazardous chemicals in East Palestine, Ohio. The derailment, which occurred on Feb. 3, forced the evacuation of the town and led to concerns about the environmental impact of the chemicals that were released. Norfolk Southern has been criticized for its handling of the derailment, and the investigation into Shaw's alleged inappropriate relationship could further damage the company's reputation.
